Words Has Meaning

Race is a very sensitive subject and one should dread lightly. Unfortunately, the word “N-E-G-R-O” has return to our lexicon in an official and derogatory fashion. If you read this article, you can sense the chill! The 2010 census data is employing it in its official count which has raised eyebrows in some quarters. Senator Harry Reid, (D), NV has said, “light-skinned and no Negro dialect” about President Barrack Obama in the book ‘Game Change’ released recently.

In 2007, the median age of the United States was 36.7 years, if you are under the age of fifty; your generation may not have uttered the word. This term went out in the sixties and rarely, seldom or certainly not use when addresses individuals of color. There are other appropriate ways of addresses a person: Mr., Mrs., Miss., or Sir. We have come a long ways in race relations in this country. Nevertheless, we have not reached the pinnacle racial equality and a color-blind society. There are segments in our society who use race as a political tool for political gains consciously or unconsciously. There are hatful people in our society who do not know the images of our past history or wish to ignore it.

In the spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday, may we live by his creed: “I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will be judged by the contend of their character.” President Obama deserves that much respect.
